Born in the Mountains. Rooted in History.
The Pecorino wine was born in Arquata del Tronto, a land nestled between the Sibillini and
Laga mountains. For centuries, local farmers cultivated this precious white grape, unaware
that it would become one of the most authentic expressions of Central Italy’s viticulture.
The Pecorino Grape.
Often misunderstood, the Pecorino grape is not named after cheese—but from ancient local
naming traditions. Its name and cultivation are deeply linked to Arquata’s unique
microclimate and biodiversity. Our vineyards are situated over 700 meters above sea level,
making each harvest rare and intense.
In 1903, agronomist Salvatore Mondini published the book “Foreign Wine Grapes
Cultivated in Italy”, a technical reference of the time. In this work, Mondini describes a
well-established viticultural reality in the province of Ascoli Piceno, and in particular, in
the territory of Arquata del Tronto.
“For a very long time, a special grape variety called Pecorino has been cultivated on the
mountains of Arquata, which many believe to be compatible with Riesling, and which
yields a very abundant and highly esteemed product.”
— Salvatore Mondini, 1903
What this source demonstrates:
- That the name “Pecorino” was already used in Arquata del Tronto at the beginning of
the 20th century, long before its modern rediscovery.
- That the grape variety was already recognized for its agronomic qualities and had a
well-established local tradition.
- That the Arquata origin of Pecorino is historically and technically documented,
disproving narratives that attribute it to other areas.
